Referees are an integral part of the football family and their performance is crucial to the the development of the game in New Zealand and within the Auckland Football Federation.

Referee education has been a key priority for the Auckland Football Federation and our referees have been given invaluable advice in technical and instructional sessions and tests, all designed to help the match officials achieve the standards required at whatever level they officiate.

Among that advice is significant tests and courses that referees undertake at AFF courses about the Laws of the Game.

If you want to know more about the various Referee Courses available to aspiring match officials you can do so by clicking here or you can contact AFF Referee Development Officer Paul Smith here: paul@aucklandfootball.org.nz

ALAN BONIFACE – Les Coffman Lifetime Achievement Award

Alan-Boniface-Soccer-football-refereeOne of Auckland Football Federation’s longest serving referees is Alan Boniface (left) who received the Les Coffman Lifetime Achievement Award in October 2015.

Alan’s refereeing career started in 1956 when he was stationed in Cyprus, doing his national service with the Royal Air Force.

Moving to New Zealand in 1970 did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm for the game andhe rose in the ranks, refereeing regional and national matches, including the Rothmans League which saw him travelling all over New Zealand.

He retired from active refereeing in 1987 after some 1200 games, and was appointed a match inspector. He has been coaching, training and assessing referees ever since.

Highlights in his refereeing career included trips to England and Fiji for courses.

“It was a marvellous experience just to be involved in the game, and getting to know the players and coaches.”

Alan was awarded the QSM for services to the community, which recognised his involvement with several Rodney charitable trusts, Camp Bentzon Youth Trust, and his service to football refereeing.
